Technology and Computer Requirements for Students

Students taking Proximity Learning courses from home or other off-campus locations will need to make sure that their computers and internet connection meet the following requirements and are setup according to the instructions listed below.   If you have questions or need help getting setup for your Proximity Learning course, please contact us at:

Supported Platforms and Operating Systems

Proximity Learning courses utilize cloud-based systems and should work on any up-to-date Windows or Mac computer or Chromebook.  In general, any Windows or Mac computer purchased within the past two to three years with at least 2GB RAM should be sufficient.  4GB RAM or better is strongly recommended.  iOS, and Android mobile devices are partially supported at this time.

  • Windows: Microsoft® Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, Windows 10, 8.1 (32-bit/64-bit), 8.0 (32-bit/64-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit)
  • Mac: Mac OS X 10.8, 10.9, 10.10 and up.
  • Chromebooks: Should be kept up-to-date with newest available Chrome OS version.
  • iOS: iOS 6 and higher
  • Android: 2.3.4 and higher

Mobile Devices:

  • Apple supported devices: iPhone 5S, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad with Retina display, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini, and iPod touch (4th & 5th generations)
  • Android supported devices: Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX, Motorola Atrix, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4, Nexus 7 tablet

 Audio/Video Equipment

(Must be properly installed and working for each student):

  • Microphone/Headphones OR Combination Headset 
  • Webcam
  • Wired Internet connection or commercial-grade WiFi (Consumer-grade WiFi equipment is not sufficient)

(Microsoft brand headsets and webcams are NOT supported.  Low-cost Logitech brand headsets and webcams are recommended)

 Plug-Ins, Add-Ins and Applications: 

  1. Adobe Flash Player (most recent version):  Windows OR Macintosh
  2. Adobe Shockwave Player:  https://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
  3. Adobe Connect (Required for audio, shared whiteboard, etc.): Windows and Mac
  4. Extract and install the PinYin Editor (required for Pinyin with tone markers):  Windows
  5. Install Chinese IME (for typing Chinese Characters): Windows 7 or Vista

(The PinYin editor and Chinese IME are only required for students enrolled in Chinese language courses)

For iOS or Android mobile devices, the following apps must be installed:

  • Adobe Air
  • Adobe Connect
  • Canvas by Instructure

Speed Tests and Diagnostics

 

We strongly suggest performing a speed test of the anticipated delivery environment utilizing tools such as: Speed Test
